The Cited & Seen Method
Diagnose what AI sees.
Improve the signals.
Test again.
AI visibility is not solved by optimizing one page, adding schema, publishing more content, or checking a few prompts in ChatGPT.
You need to understand how AI systems currently interpret your organization, identify what is shaping those answers, improve the content and authority signals behind them, then test whether the outcome changed.
That is the Cited & Seen Method.
DIAGNOSE → ACT → RECHECK
Start with the outcome
Before changing your content, you need to know what problem you are trying to solve.
The Cited & Seen Method starts by testing how AI systems understand and surface your organization across two different situations.
Recognition
Does AI understand you when someone asks about you by name?
Recognition testing looks at whether AI understands: Who you are, What you do, What topics you are associated with, and Why someone should trust you
Strong recognition means AI understands you when someone already knows your name.
Discovery
Does AI surface you when someone describes a need instead?
Discovery testing looks at whether AI connects your organization with the problems, topics, services, expertise, or opportunities you want to own.
Strong discovery means AI introduces you to someone who does not already know you.
You need both.
Being accurately described when someone searches your name is useful.
Being included when someone asks who they should hire, join, trust, read, invite, support, or learn from is where visibility starts creating business value.
Four AI visibility outcomes
Testing reveals one of four outcomes.
Cited
AI references your organization or content as a source.
Seen
AI recognizes and describes you, but stronger citation, recommendation, or discovery signals are missing.
Skipped
AI leaves you out of relevant answers where your organization should reasonably appear.
Misrepresented
AI surfaces your organization but presents information that is inaccurate, incomplete, inconsistent, or outdated.

Diagnosis tells you where to look
The outcome is the symptom.
The next step is finding the signals behind it.
We investigate the areas most likely to influence how AI systems understand and connect information about your organization.
Clarity
Does your content clearly explain who you are, what you do, who you serve, and why your work matters? Weak clarity forces AI systems to infer relationships your website should state explicitly.
Connection
Are related topics, services, people, resources, and authoritative pages meaningfully connected? A website full of good individual pages still creates weak signals when those pages operate as islands.
Authority
What evidence supports your claims? Research, case studies, expertise, credentials, cited sources, examples, external mentions, and third-party validation all help establish why your organization belongs in an answer.
Source Consistency
Do your website, LinkedIn presence, third-party profiles, directories, publications, and other sources tell a consistent story? Conflicting descriptions weaken the picture AI systems assemble.
Access and Interpretation
Are important pages accessible and structured so search engines and AI systems are able to retrieve and interpret them? Technical problems matter. They are one part of the diagnosis, not the entire strategy.
Then improve the signals
Once you know the outcome and understand what is contributing to it, the Cited & Seen Content Framework moves the work forward.
The Cited & Seen Content Framework
Create
Build the Source
Publish or improve the permanent source you want people and AI systems to learn from: hub pages, research, case studies, guides, tools, definitions, and source-of-truth pages.
Connect
Build the Connections
Link supporting articles to the hub, connect related pages to one another, use consistent terminology, connect audience pages and offers, and make the relationship between ideas explicit.
Strengthen
Build the Authority
Add original research, client patterns, examples, credentials, cited evidence, case studies, expert input, updated findings, and third-party validation. Refresh weak or outdated sources.
Spread
Build the Presence
Distribute the same core ideas through LinkedIn, TikTok, Reels, Shorts, Facebook, email, speaking, partner channels, guest articles, podcasts, media, and other credible external sources.
A strong content system needs all four.
-
Create without Connect leaves isolated pages.
-
Connect without Strengthen creates organized content with weak evidence.
-
Strengthen without Spread leaves authority where fewer people encounter it.
-
Spread without Create produces attention without a durable source behind it.
The goal is not maximum content production.
The goal is a connected body of credible information around the topics, problems, expertise, and opportunities you want associated with your organization.
Why all four actions matter
Test Again
The process does not end when content gets published. You recheck the original prompts.
-
Did AI representation improve?
-
Did recognition become more accurate?
-
Did discovery improve?
-
Did citations change?
-
Did competitors appear less often?
-
Did stronger sources begin shaping the answer?
-
Did a Skipped result become Seen?
-
Did Seen become Cited?
That is the feedback loop.
AI visibility becomes measurable when you compare outcomes over time.
DIAGNOSE → ACT → RECHECK
What the Cited & Seen Method looks like in practice
The Method helps identify which signals are limiting your visibility and where focused changes are most likely to improve the outcome.
For an organization, the priority might be creating a definitive topic hub that connects its expertise, programs, research, and resources.
For a professional services firm, the issue might be weak connections between its services, expertise, client results, industries, and the problems prospective clients are trying to solve.
For a thought leader or expert, the priority might be strengthening the connection between their name and the ideas they want to be known for, then backing those associations with books, articles, speaking, research, media coverage, and other credible sources.
-
Some businesses and experts are well understood when searched by name but rarely appear when AI is asked who to hire, recommend, follow, invite, quote, or learn from.
-
Others have strong content but too little external authority supporting it.
-
Others are visible, but AI describes their expertise too broadly or connects them with the wrong topics.
Different outcomes point to different actions.
The Method identifies what is getting in the way, prioritizes what matters most, and gives you a structured way to improve it.
Before you publish more content, find out where you are Cited, Seen, Skipped, or Misrepresented.
